Happy Go Skateboarding Day!
Each year on June 21st, skaters around the world celebrate the pure exhilaration, creativity, and spirit of our beloved sport by blowing off all our responsibilities and chores in order to go skateboarding. It’s called Go Skateboarding Day, and it’s the best day of the year.
On this holy day, skaters will show their love and support for skateboarding by holding fundraisers, contests, protests and demos. They’ll skate across cities, gather in skate parks, stream into local skate shops, and make pilgrimages to their favorite skate spots, all while taking part in the grind heard ‘round the world.
Where It All Began
Founded by the International Association of Skateboard Companies (IASC) on June 21, 2004, Go Skateboarding Day began with a few simple skate sessions and barbeques held in Southern California, the unofficial capital of skateboarding.
Since then it has grown into a worldwide holiday, celebrated by everyone from passionate skaters to those who are simply inspired by the sport. Events are hosted by retailers, manufacturers, skate parks, distributors, and individuals. To take part, all you need to do is find an event near you and show up!
Go Skateboarding Day originated as the day for skateboarders to have fun, to raise awareness about the issues we face; to show the world what skateboarding is really all about; to reclaim our culture; and to define skateboarding as the rebellious, creative celebration of independence it continues to be.
Drop Everything and Skate!
In the years since that first celebration, Go Skateboarding Day continues to grow but the mission remains the same: Have fun, go skateboarding!
