About Go Skateboarding Day

Go Skateboarding Day (GSD), held on June 21, is the official holiday of skateboarding. The holiday began June 21, 2004 as an excuse for skateboarders to skip their obligations, go skateboarding and have fun!

Founded by the International Association of Skateboard Companies (IASC), Go Skateboarding Day gives passionate skateboarders who embody skateboarding, as well as those who are simply inspired by skateboarding, the opportunity to drop everything and get on a skateboard. GSD is a cooperative of decentralized events that take place around the globe. Skateboard retailers, manufacturers, skateparks, distributors, organizations and individuals of all colors, creeds, and attitudes hold skateboarding events to celebrate the holiday.

GSD originated as the day for skateboarders to have fun, to raise awareness about the issues we face, to show the world what skateboarding is really all about, to reclaim our culture and to define skateboarding as the rebellious, creative celebration of independence it continues to be. In the three years since that first celebration, the holiday continues to grow, but the mission remains the same: Have fun, go skateboarding!

2006 GO SKATEBOARDING DAY WRAP UP

In 2006 Go Skateboarding Day was bigger and more insane than ever! With over 32 countries participating and over 2.5 million media impressions, plus the videos all of you posted on youtube.com and the friends we made on myspace.com. And that’s just the stuff we knew about! There was talk of underground movements and backyard sessions all over the world, all of which only contribute to the fact that skateboarders are a force to be reckoned with.

Here are a few quotes from across the U.S. just to get you hyped to do your thing in 2007.

Xtreme Funktion Skateshop, Hamilton, NJ"Go Skateboarding Day proved to be much more than just an excuse to spend the day riding our skateboards. The mayor of our town came to us that day for suggestions on how we could improve upon our existing public skatepark following the event! This was an outreach that is much appreciated by the local skaters, and on August 24th, our first scheduled meeting with the mayor should prove to be very exciting and inspiring. This is one of many positive steps forward for skateboarders in our community, and Go Skateboarding Day was an integral part in making this all happen."

Asylum Skateshop, Oceanside, CA"We Won! We took to the streets and let the city know that we won't stand for the lack of action they've taken to replace the demolished skatepark. We skated to City Hall where our message was clear and by 2:00 p.m. everything had changed. We were permitted to skate at the popular band shell area on the beach (which is normally illegal) with more than 70 skateboarders strong for the entire day! By the end of June 21st, not only had we gone skateboarding, but also had flyers from the city with dates for public meeting on plans for a new skatepark. We were determined to make it happen on Go Skateboarding Day and we did! I had to stop a couple of times in amazement of what we accomplished."

Skatepark of Tampa, Tampa, FL"...I’m not sure what type of impression we made, but for better or worse we certainly made an impression. We were all skateboarders getting together in a group to skate in Downtown Tampa like no one else ever has. That was history right there and I’m proud of every single one of the guys there for being a part of it. I’ll leave you with a quote from one of the cops while we were cuffed. He said, "It’s guys like you that give skateboarders a bad name." If he only knew… Thank you. See you next year... right?"
